Downsizing
We’ve all been there. Trying to fit more into a small space that just doesn’t fit it all. The struggle is real especially for families who end up downsizing their current place of living. The bigger the house, the more stuff you have. Just the way it is. When families relocate to a smaller home, it can feel incredibly overwhelming as if trying to stuff a suitcase with all you want to take on vacation. Sometimes, it just doesn’t close and you end up having to readjust or sit on top just to zip it up. Been there, done that!
We’ve written about purging clutter and freeing up our mind-space, which are both crucial in the transition from large to small living spaces. Less is more in this case and a mind-set of minimalism should be adopted: what is the bare minimum that I can live with? How many pieces of furniture will each room hold and which ones are the highest priority? Do I really need four sets of dishes or that extra golf cart, or a golf cart at all? Depending on how dramatic the downsize is will dictate how you begin to make these big decisions.
We experience this all of the time with clients who end up moving into a smaller home than they previously had. It’s a big adjustment for anyone, especially if that transition is exponential in terms of square footage. Letting go will feel sad at first, but once things are gone and the floors and countertops become empty, you’ll start to experience the freedom of less clutter and more time to focus on what’s important. Clutter and stuff zap time and energy and we all know that in this day and age, we can use all the help we can get in that department. You’ll be able to enjoy a more peaceful and happier you. Stop stuffing that suitcase, and relinquish the unessentials to gain peace of mind.
